Sylvia G Barrett

Sylvia G. Barrett, 83, of Lakeland, FL, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024, to join the Lord. Born on October 20, 1940, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Lasmin Smith (Nembhard).

Sylvia was a beloved figure in her community, renowned for her warm and welcoming nature. Affectionately referred to as a prayer warrior, she touched the lives of many, whether through her work at the Polk County Property Appraisers Office, her active involvement in Lake Gibson United Methodist Church, or her encounters with friends at the local Walmart garden center. She found solace and joy in the outdoors, tending to her garden, nurturing her fruit trees, and engaging in walks to connect with her neighbors.

Her husband, Hubert Barrett, preceded her in death in 2004. Sylvia is survived by her siblings Winnifred, Olive, Beatrice, Beneto, Delores and Bevon; her children Ann, Maureen (Karl), Paula, and Barrington; as well as her 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia's commitment to her faith was unwavering, as evidenced by her active participation in Lake Gibson United Methodist Church. She dedicated herself to various roles within the church, including liturgical dancing, choir singing, and visiting the sick and shut-in. Even after limiting her driving for safety reasons, Sylvia continued her ministry through S.G.’s Text Ministry, sharing scriptures and offering prayers to all who reached out to her.

A visitation in memory of Sylvia will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Lake Gibson United Methodist Church, located at 424 W Daughtery Road, Lakeland, FL 33809, followed by a service from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM.

Sylvia will be laid to rest at Lakeland Memorial Gardens, 2125 South Bartow Road, Lakeland, FL 33801.
