June 29, 1944 ~ November 26, 2022 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Tribute

Paul Frederick Stein passed away on November 26, 2022, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 29, 1944, in Washington, DC to Saul and Grace Stein, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pamela Stein, his brother Steven Stein, and his adult children with his first wife (Claudia Slate): Renee Stein Morehouse (John), James Stein (Tao), and Elizabeth Stein (David Tooley). He is also survived by his five grandchildren Quinn, Kate, Clara, Cedar and River.

Paul graduated from Franklin and Marshall in 1966 and from medical school at University of Tennessee in 1969. He then completed his internship in Roanoke. He served in the US Army as a captain and physician from 1971 to 1973. The family later moved to Lakeland in 1975, where he managed the emergency department at Lakeland Regional Hospital. In 1976, he opened a family practice in Lakeland until his retirement in 2011. He was loved by his patients and staff.

When Paul was a child, The Story of Ferdinand was his favorite book. He read it to his children and imparted its message as a parent: enjoy life’s simple pleasures and be yourself. Paul lived the conviction, delighting in tennis games, bike rides, walks on the beach, and mountain hikes with his children. He listened with love and acceptance as they made their own decisions, and he quietly basked in the pride of their accomplishments. Paul also loved animals, especially horses and dogs. He and his wife, Pamela, bred and raced thoroughbreds. He once said that the best part about owning horses was the visits to the farm in Ocala to be with them and give them carrots and mints. The family dog, Cosmo, was by his side until he passed.

Paul was known for his kindness and generosity. He was a humble and private man. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a joyful smile. He was an exemplary father, doctor, and husband. He and his wife, Pamela, enjoyed life to its fullest. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on December 18th at the Lakeland Funeral Home, 2125 South Bartow Hwy, Lakeland, FL 33801.
