Patricia Ann Mason
‘Nonnie’
Patricia Ann Mason passed away Wednesday, February 24th, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice due to respiratory failure. She was 74 years old.
Patricia was born June 23, 1946 in Northumberland, Pennsylvania to Ruth and Samuel Lewis. Patricia moved to Florida with her parents and two siblings in 1954. She graduated with highest honors from Lakeland High School in 1964. Patricia answered her calling to become a healer whose natural talent was in her ability to compose compassion and apply critical knowledge to all patients whose life would rest in her caring and highly able hands. She graduated from Polk Community College in 1984 with an Associate’s in Science Degree in Nursing and was awarded notoriety for scholastic distinction from the college Dean of Academics himself at her graduation.
Patricia practiced as a Licensed Practical Nurse and as a Registered Nurse at Lakeland Regional Medical Center for 30 years. In 1994, LRMC awarded Patricia the highest honor given to a single nurse once every year for their professional excellence for always going beyond the accepted standard of practice called the 'Nurse of The Year Award’. In 1999, Patricia was recruited to work her final decade as a nurse clinician in the newly built Bartow Hospital to lead in the development of the Emergency Department’s new and growing nursing staff. With her wit and ability to teach the newer generation of nurses her incredible skills and professional demeanor, she was able to ensure the highest standards would be the only standards. That tradition is seen today in the now, older veteran nurse leadership that so many credit Patricia as their mentor and professional inspiration many years ago. She was a gifted healer, who would always remain at the bedside of the extremely sick and critically injured patients of our community whose lives, she saved so many, and hearts, she touched all.
Patricia’s life constant purpose was undoubtedly her own family. So bright her healing beacon would shine, that three of her four children would also become Registered Nurses and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner's because of the desire to emulate such excellence as they visualized in their beautiful mother. She is survived by her husband, George Lewis Mason III of Lakeland, whose marriage lasted a stellar 52 years till they meet again. She is survived by her four children, Dawn Muehler Leiva of Lakeland, Melanie Ruth Moss of Davenport. Scott Lewis Mason of Apex, NC, and Troy Allen Mason of Lakeland. Patricia is survived by nine of her ten grandchildren and all seven of her great-grandchildren who have always known her as their ‘Nonnie.’ This nickname started as one of the first words spoken aloud from the baby lips of her eldest grandchild, Lanette Hart, who trademarked ‘Nonnie’ as the sobriquet to two whole generations of grandchildren. Patricia is also survived by her sister, Dolores Cone of Lakeland, and Chester Allen Lewis of Orlando, FL. She was preceded in death by her first husband and father to her two daughters, George Muehler, her eldest brother, Thomas Lewis, and her grandson, Chad Michael Hughes.
