John Alfieri, 94 formerly of Lakeland, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2021. John was born on August 30, 1926 in New York City, son of the late Giuseppe and Angelina Alfieri. He grew up in Little Italy surrounded by his four bothers, his sister, extended Italian family and friends. John proudly served his country in WWII and was initially stationed at Fort Knox before being sent to Mindanao in the Philippines and ending the war stationed at Pearl Harbor.
After the war, John returned to New York City and married the love of this life, Ann DiMaggio, in 1952. He took over his family business, Alfieri Cigars, in Little Italy and over the next 40 years, transformed the business into a successful Candy Store and Lottery location. In 2015 he and his wife moved to Lakeland, Florida to be closer to their family.
John was the most generous man you could ever hope to meet. He was a natural born storyteller who loved nothing more than to regale family and strangers alike with stories all about his time in Little Italy and the colorful characters he met. His enthusiasm and humor were infectious and no one could interact with him without smiling. John was also a devoted husband, always putting his beloved wife first, making her smile, laugh and enjoy life, up until the day he died.
John is survived by his wife, Ann DiMaggio Alfieri as well as many godchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great niece and nephews.
