Ellen R. Follett

Ellen R. Follett died peacefully at home in Lakeland, Florida on November 12, 2021, twenty-five days after her 103rd birthday.  Born in Hammond, Wisconsin on October 18, 1918 to William and Jane (Rand) Rittenburg, she was predeceased by her son, Donald Follett (2007), husband, Archie Follett (2008), and daughter in-law, Vicki Follett (2021).

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sally Follett, of Pasadena, California; two daughters, Peggie Decker and her husband, Dwight, of Tampa, Florida; Anne Follett-Hogshead and her husband, Preston, of Strafford, New Hampshire; and son, John Follett, of Smithsburg, Maryland. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Ellen earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eastern Nazarene College (1941) and a Master of Education degree from Boston University (1943).  She taught high school English in Ohio for thirteen years but was much more than an English teacher.  She taught life lessons every day by being an example. She saw the good in everyone.  She was genuinely thankful.  She was kind, trusted, and praised and loved God.  She was very involved in her church, and through the years taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was active in the Dare to Care Ministry and missions. After retiring to Florida in 1979, she and Archie traveled around the world seven times during the next thirty years.  They were volunteer missionaries to South Africa, Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Switzerland.

She embraced life’s joys with childlike delight and would happily clap her hands in glee. Her happy smile, hearty laugh, voracious sweet tooth, and sweet temperament will be missed by many.

Services will be held at Lakeland Funeral Home on Saturday, December 11, at 11AM.  Donations may be given to the Scholarship Fund of Eastern Nazarene College (23 E. Elm Ave, Quincy, MA  02170) in lieu of flowers.
