Eleanor R. Rowand

Eleanor Ruth (Morris) Rowand of Lakeland Florida, born October 21, 1925 in Fairmont West Virginia, went to be with Our Lord on August 16, 2018. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sue Froehlich and son in law Kurt Frederick Froehlich of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Naomi Morris of Fairmont, West Virginia and her beloved husband of 65 years, Rev. David Anderson Rowand. Eleanor and David Rowand served many Disciple of Christ congregations over 50 years of ministry in Vermont, Washington, D.C., Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, Charleston, West Virginia, Huntington, Indiana, Flint, Michigan and Bluefield, West Virginia as well as many interim pastorates following retirement. She taught Sunday school leading youth and adult classes.

Eleanor graduated from Fairmont State University in 1948 and was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She taught third grade while David was completing his Master’s Degree at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. She also taught at Strong John Thompson Elementary School in Washington, DC, and substitute taught in Charleston, West Virginia. Later in life, she worked as a Coordinator for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Bluefield, West Virginia and enjoyed serving the community. She was active in the Disciples of Christ Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) and served in numerous leadership roles in various states. Eleanor was successful in helping other women as a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant for 38 years in both Michigan and Florida. She was a Lifetime member of Weight Watchers and taught the “Pounds Aweigh” class at Lakeland Harbor for many years. She loved to socialize with others and was known for her beautiful contagious smile.

A visitation will be held 10AM on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 with a funeral at 11AM in the Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 2125 S. Bartow Highway, Lakeland, Florida. Burial service will take place following the funeral. The family will receive friends at a visitation prior to the service.
