Daniel Marcus Shetterly

Daniel Marcus Shetterly passed away at the age of 70 on April 16, 2021 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Dan was born on July 14, 1950 in Thief River Falls Minnesota. In his early years he moved with the family between Minnesota and Lakeland, Florida. Lakeland, Florida became his permanent home in 1957. He attended local schools and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1968. He attended the University of South Florida and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts and a major in sociology. He is survived by his wife Joyce, his sons Marc (Elsa) and Jonah, a daughter Stacie, a brother David (Marge) and granddaughter, Madison. He was preceded in death by his father Harry Shetterly, mother Lorraine Shetterly, and sister Connie Shetterly.

Dan loved living in Florida and especially enjoyed the natural environment of the state. While he had a degree in sociology, his passion were the rich variety of plants, trees, and flowers that make Florida so special. If you had a question about a plant he would likely have the answer. A grand variety of plants were an integral part of the places he lived.

As a young man Dan had a number of jobs ranging from newspaper delivery, to electrician, to lawn maintenance. He eventually settled in with the United States Postal Service and retired in the early 90s.

In 2008 he married Joyce, his wife of 13 years. They built a beautiful life together enjoying simple pleasures like an afternoon walk, a nice lunch outing, and the occasional trip to enjoy the many wonders Florida has to offer.

He was engaging, well learned on many subjects, and a fighter for what he believed in. He will be missed by many.

Arrangements are being handled by Lakeland Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for Thursday at 11:00, April 22, at the Oak Hill Burial Park.
