Strong in Love and Great in Spirit, Charles (Charlie) M. Owen, Jr. was called to heaven on Monday, April 5, 2021 at the age of 87 in Lakeland, FL.
Charlie was born on November 8, 1933 in Montgomery, Alabama. If you ask a hundred people who knew Charlie to describe who he was, you will hear many versions. Young go-getter working jobs from digging clams in Boston harbor to picking fruit in Florida. Korean War Navy Veteran who served on the USS Mount Olympus. Railroad conductor. Music lover. International businessman. Dearest friend. Avid reader. Charismatic speaker and storyteller. Fierce golfer. Powerful motivator. Salesman. Dutiful son. Mindful brother. Dedicated husband. Loving father. Proud grandfather. Faithful Christian.
He was all of this and so much more. In fact, if you stopped to listen for a moment, he would share a (often laugh-out-loud) story about the people, places, and experiences of his life. This would ultimately be summed up with advice about living life to the fullest, or a reminder that your family will always be your port in the storm, or somehow turn the story into a way to praise, compliment, or encourage you.
Throughout his life, Charlie pursued a deeper personal connection with Christ and never shied away from sharing his faith with others. He showed his children the way to Christ, taught them to lean on Him in their darkest hours, and rejoice in Him in the brightest days. Charlie had immense gratitude for the life he had been given and found comfort and strength in knowing that while he had to leave his family, it would only be until they meet again in heaven.
Charlie’s career and family life were rooted in Lakeland, FL for many years. From one-time local business owner to devout family man, he left a lasting impression on the people and places of a flourishing community. Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Owen and Josephine Moore Owen, wife Carol Sue (Roush) Owen, and brother Terry Owen. Charlie is survived in life by his sister Mary (Owen) Gonzalez; sons Mark Owen and Kerry Owen; daughters Kelli Diane (Owen) Bailey, Machelle (Warner-Lovin) Croasmun, Sami (Warner-Platter) Ogle; grandchildren Sara Platter, Kenneth Platter, Jared Platter, Jason Lovin, Emmalee Croasmun, Kiren Owen, Dallas Owen, Aubrey Bailey, and Jayde Bailey.
