Aaron James Bates

A devoted husband and father, Aaron James Bates unexpectedly passed away on February 26, 2022. He was 40 years old. Aaron is survived by his wife, Katie; their children, son Caleb, 14; daughters Nora-Claire, 12; Caroline, 10; Parker, 7; his parents, Virgil Bates, Jr., and Cindy; his brother, Virgil Bates III, and other extended family.

Aaron was born in Longview, Texas, and grew up in Lakeland, Florida. He attended local schools, Rochelle School of the Arts, Lakeland High School, University of South Florida, and Florida State University. Aaron and his wife, Katie, met while they were both members of the Lakeland High School band, and they married in 2003. In growing their family, Aaron and Katie’s family became fondly known to loved ones as the “Bates Bunch.” Aaron has worked in various industries and recently started his own business, using his artistic skills to design and create unique wood-work. He was passionate about sharing his love of music with others, from acting as drum major at Lakeland High School to later volunteering his time and energy to support that same band as an adult. Throughout his life, he was highly involved in promoting his local community. Aaron will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Access Church on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 2:00 P.M.




Aaron James Bates II (A.J.)

A deeply beloved son and grandson, Aaron James Bates II (A.J.) unexpectedly passed away on February 26, 2022. He was 17 years old. Aaron is survived by his mother, Katie; his brother, Caleb, 14; sisters, Nora-Claire, 12; Caroline, 10; Parker, 7; paternal uncle, grandparents, and extended relatives; and maternal uncle and aunt, grandparents, cousins, and extended family.

Aaron was born on July 27, 2004; he was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. Aaron was a senior at Lakeland High School. He was an active member of the high school’s marching band, symphony band, and jazz band. His many musical accomplishments include being chosen to participate in All-County band and All-State band for multiple years. Aaron was extremely proud to follow in his father’s footsteps, leading the Lakeland High School as head drum major for his junior and senior years. Aaron was also proud to be a varsity cheerleader. He was accepted into Florida State University as a music major with a euphonium concentration and was looking forward to moving to Tallahassee in the fall. Aaron will be remembered by all for his kind heart and sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held at Access Church on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 2:00 P.M.
