Edna A Burkey

Edna Ann (Johnston) Burkey, age 89, passed away on Easter, March 31, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida. She was the widow of John D. Burkey. They shared 62 years of marriage together prior to John’s passing.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Edna was the daughter of Edward and Edna (Kreft) Johnston. She graduated from Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois and attended St. Paul Bible College (now known as Crown College) in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

During her lifetime, she worked at St. Paul Lutheran in Lakeland, FL briefly as a kindergarten teacher and later as a church secretary. Her proudest titles in life being that of wife, mother, and grandmother.

Edna was an active and beloved member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakeland. Edna and John were both very involved with boards and ministries there. St. Paul’s brought much joy and depth to their lives. She also enjoyed reading, cooking, and especially any time spent with her family. She will be remembered for her kind heart and her love for Jesus.

Edna is survived by a son, Dean Burkey of Lakeland, FL, a daughter, Lisa (Burkey) Mowry and Larry, of Westmont, IL; her granddaughters, Laura (Burkey) Courvoisier and Kevin of Costa Mesa, CA, Dana (Burkey) Peterson and Chris of Costa Mesa, CA, Reagan Mowry of Westmont, IL, and Parker Mowry of Westmont, IL; and 3 great-grandchildren: Lillian, Owen, and Grady. She was predeceased by her husband, John and her son, Richard Burkey (widow, Sharon) of El Cajon, CA.

A celebration of Edna’s wonderful life with be on Friday, May 10, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church (4450 Harden Blvd. in Lakeland, FL) at 10 a.m. Please join us prior to this celebration for coffee and cookies, two things that Edna loved, at 9 a.m., inside the front entrance of St. Paul’s.

In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Edna may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4450 Harden Blvd. Lakeland, FL 33813. Edna loved her Lord deeply and enjoyed praising him at St. Paul’s for decades.
